THE COLORS OF CULTURE SHOCK:
Experiencing and Surviving Culture Shock
Facilitator Guide

The Colors of Culture ShockAs a teacher and trainer, one of my biggest challenges has always been to find a way to clearly present at the beginning of the session the relevancy of the message I wanted to get across. The task is even harder when I deal with groups of different sizes and cultures, various levels of culture understanding or degrees of resistance to the learning concepts. That is where The Colors of Culture Shock activity comes in. It helps create real culture shock situations right at the beginning of your presentation, thus gearing up participants to be eager to find out what makes them react the way they did. The learning comes simply to all that “we all see the world not as it is, but as we are” and that our ethnocentric outlook often prevents us from viewing others’ points of view when they are different or even opposed to ours.

This manual helps the facilitator lead the participants from the stage of ethnocentrism into ethnorelativism, just because persons from other cultures may think act or react contrary to our expectations does not means that their actions are wrong.

This facilitator’s guide contains:

  1. Step by step points to help your team survive culture shock with a lot of room for creativity;
  2. Numerous cultural examples and debriefing;
  3. A master copy PRE- and POST- test cultural inventory (Facilitator will make as many copies as the number of participants)
  4. A master copy of “the Culture Shock Form” (Facilitator will make as many copies as the number of participants).

The Colors of Culture Shock: Experiencing and Surviving Culture Shock was designed out of the necessity for:

  • TEACHERS
  • SCHOOL OR PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS
  • UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS
  • HUMAN RESOURCES PROFESSIONALS
  • CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION TRAINERS
  • MANAGERS WITH A MULTICULTURAL WORKFORCE AND
  • INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION FACILITATORS

Seeking for an interactive and real life activity that they can easily use as:

  • To coach individual as well as small and medium size groups how to live in another culture
  • For multicultural groups to understand and appreciate each others’ perspectives
  • To lead any team from ethnocentrism to ethno-relativism
  • To help people from one culture survive culture shock in another.

A Captivating New Book from Emmanuel Ngomsi, Ph.D.
“Shocking Cultures: Hilarious and Disastrous Challenges of Foreign Workers in the USA”

Shocking Cultures: Hilarious and Disastrous Challenges of Foreign Workers in the USASome of the stories in Shocking Cultures will make you laugh. Some will make you angry. Some will leave you frustrated. But all of them will make you more aware of — and more sensitive to — the differences that bind us all.

Told by a school teacher who came to the U.S. from Cameroon in West Africa, here are the true tales of people, including himself, from cultures very different from the U.S., who find in their workplaces, in their co-workers, and within themselves an unexpected lack of understanding and acceptance.

“Culture shock usually occurs when people unconsciously apply their own rules to people from another culture,” the author says. And that can lead to feelings of frustration, surprise, disorientation, confusion, isolation, hurt, and sometimes even retaliation.

If you are a cultural or diversity trainer, or a professor or teacher with diverse students, or a manager with a diverse workforce, or a person wanting to understand what can happen when people from different cultures interact, you’ll find the examples and lessons in Shocking Cultures invaluable as you deal with cultural differences. Let this heart-warming book be a guide and teacher for you, your family, and your co‑workers. In today’s global society, nothing will build bridges of understanding faster than an awareness of the differences that join us in our humanity.
