Cultural Diversity Competency and Racial Profiling for Law Enforcement Officers

Picture
P.O.S.T APPROVED 3-HOUR CREDIT - INTERPERSONAL

Law Enforcement officers often face the challenges of understanding and interpreting the behaviors, attitudes and actions of culturally and linguistically diverse citizens. Sometimes, the lack of understanding of the cultures of minority populations leads officers to do or say something --sometimes very innocently-- that can easily be interpreted as evidence of racial profiling.

The purpose of this important course is to help Peace Officers develop the necessary skills to deal effectively with various situations presented to them by individuals of various ethnicities without being labeled or accused of racial profiling. Additionally, Officers will find responses to the following 4 questions that are frequently asked in the law enforcement departments:
  1. What cultural factors influence minority public’s negative perception of Peace Officers?
  2. How can officers enhance their effectiveness in cross-cultural communications and problem solving skills in order to deal efficiently with people of various races?
  3. How to avoid the perception of Police profiling by dealing appropriately with the behavioral patterns (verbal and non-verbal) exhibited by people of various ethnicities?
  4. What types of Police interventions are appropriate with resistance of persons of various races, in order to avoid perception of Police Profiling when providing appropriate responses to diverse cultural confrontations? This course, Cultural Diversity Competency and Racial Profiling for Peace Officers is approved as a required course for three (3) credit hours of Continuing Education for Law Enforcement Officers in the State of Missouri with reciprocity in many other states. “This is the best class of the week. Dr. Ngomsi makes sensitive and complex issues so simple to understand, and the discussions so comfortable for all. I like his stories, his sense of humor and the examples he uses.”

Captain J. Chapman, CIT Trainer
